What your FIRE number is
Your FIRE number is the amount of invested wealth that could cover your spending indefinitely, so work becomes optional. The usual shortcut is yearly spending times 25, which is the same as a 4% withdrawal rate: spend 40,000 a year and your target is 1,000,000.
The 4% figure comes from William Bengen's 1994 study of historical US returns and the 1998 Trinity study that followed it. Both looked at how much a retiree could withdraw each year, adjusted for inflation, without running out of money over 30 years. It is a starting point, not a promise.
How this calculator works
Enter what you expect to spend each year once you stop working, what you have invested today, and how much you add each month. The calculator grows your portfolio month by month at the return you choose and finds the first month it crosses your FIRE number.
The return is a real return, meaning after inflation. That keeps every figure in today's money, so the FIRE number you see is what you will need in today's prices. A diversified stock-heavy portfolio has historically returned around 5% a year after inflation, but past returns do not guarantee future ones, so try a lower figure too.
Once you reach your FIRE number, the chart stops your savings and withdraws your yearly spending each year, so you can see whether the portfolio holds up to age 95. Add up to three scenarios to compare levers side by side, for example saving more versus spending less.
What Coast FIRE means
Coast FIRE is the point where your existing investments, left alone with no new contributions, would grow to your FIRE number by a chosen retirement age. Once you reach it you only need to earn enough to cover your current spending; retirement is already funded.
Set your Coast FIRE retirement age above to see the number. It is your FIRE number discounted back to today by the years left and your expected return, so it drops fast the younger you are.
Assumptions worth questioning
The 4% rule was tested over 30-year retirements. If you plan to stop working at 40, your money may need to last 50 years or more, and many early retirees use 3% to 3.5% for that reason. Lowering the withdrawal rate raises your FIRE number, so compare both.
The calculator also ignores taxes on withdrawals, pensions or state benefits you may receive later, and the order in which good and bad years arrive. Use it to see the shape of your path and how much each lever matters, then revisit the numbers as your life changes.
