What a net worth percentile means

A percentile tells you where you rank, not how much you have. If you are in the 70th percentile for your age, your net worth is higher than about 70% of households in that age group and lower than about 30%. The 50th percentile is the median, the household right in the middle.

Net worth is what you own minus what you owe. A negative number is common early in a career: nearly one in five US households under 35 owes more than it owns, often because of student loans.

Median vs mean

The mean, or average, adds up every household's wealth and divides by the number of households. A few very wealthy families pull it far above what a typical household has. For US households under 35, the mean net worth in 2022 was about $183,500, while the median was $39,000.

That is why this calculator ranks you by percentile and shows the median, not the average. Measured against the mean, most people look behind, simply because the top sits so far out: in the 55 to 64 group, the 99th percentile is above $17 million.

Why your age matters

Wealth builds over decades. Retirement accounts compound, mortgages get paid down and earnings usually rise until your fifties. The median net worth of US households grows from $39,000 under 35 to about $410,000 for ages 65 to 74, then dips after 75 as retirees spend their savings.

So the same number means very different things at different ages. $200,000 puts a 30 year old around the 81st percentile of their age group, while a 60 year old with the same net worth sits below the 40th. Comparing within your own age group is the fairer benchmark.

Where the data comes from

The figures come from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances 2022, the most detailed survey of US household wealth. It runs every three years and samples about 4,600 families, including extra wealthy households so the top of the distribution is measured properly.

We computed weighted percentiles from the Fed's public summary data, grouping households by the age of the head of household into the same six bands the Fed uses. Our medians are within half a percent of the Fed's published figures.

A few caveats. The numbers describe US households, not individuals, so a couple's combined wealth counts once. They are in 2022 dollars and reflect 2022; markets and house prices have moved since. If you live outside the US, treat the result as a rough benchmark only: wealth levels, home ownership and public pensions differ a lot between countries. We keep every amount in US dollars, because converting would not make the comparison any more accurate.
